Worming Horses

The timing and frequency of worming of adults depends very much upon the likely challenge to the individual. In other words, horses that are correctly wormed before moving onto a paddock that has not had horses on for at least a couple of years, and where the horse lives alone, may well rarely need worming. Horses at a livery stable, or in another similarly dense horse population, are likely to need regular worming. There are, however, other measures that can be used to reduce the frequency of treatment, and also means of determining whether worming is necessary at all. Note that resistance to wormers does occur in this country and is due to incorrect usage of wormers; consequently, worming needs to be discussed on a case-by-case basis with the vet.
